Community guidelines
Last updated: October 7, 2026
ExpeditionSpot works because boaters share what they know: what the river is doing, where the camps are, what a rapid looked like last week. These guidelines keep that useful and safe. They apply in trip chat and calls, river rooms and their live sessions, suggested guide edits, and Scout, and they are part of our Terms of Use.
The short version: be truthful about the river, be decent to people, post only what is yours to share, and keep it about the trip and the water.
Everywhere
- Be decent. No harassment, threats, bullying, hate or slurs aimed at anyone, and no pressure on someone who has said no.
- Be yourself. Do not pretend to be another person, a guide service or agency staff.
- Respect privacy. Do not post someone else's phone number, address, permit details or photos of them that they would not want shared.
- Keep it legal and clean. Nothing sexually explicit, nothing that shows or encourages serious harm, nothing illegal, and no spam, ads or selling.
- Share only what is yours. Your own words, photos and videos, or what you have permission to share. See Copyright and takedown.
Trip chat and calls
Trip chat and calls are for the people on the trip. What is said there stays with the crew: do not copy messages, photos or call audio out of the trip to embarrass anyone. The trip's owner can remove messages, and anyone can leave a trip. Use the Pay buttons and settle-up honestly: ask for what you actually spent.
River rooms
- Keep posts about the river: conditions, flows, hazards, access, camps, regulations and closures.
- Be accurate about hazards. Say what you saw, where and when (a mile or a rapid, the date and the flow if you know it). Do not guess at a hazard you did not see or play one down.
- Follow the room's moderators and agency staff. Only officials speak in a river's live sessions; everyone else listens.
- Votes are for usefulness, not for liking the person. Posts with enough downvotes are removed automatically.
Line descriptions
- Describe a line you have run yourself, and give the levels you ran it at. Say what changes at other levels only if you know.
- Readers are told that lines come from other boaters' experience and that they must scout every rapid they do not know. Do not write a line as if it made scouting unnecessary.
Guide edits
- Suggest an edit for something you know first-hand or from the agency that manages the river, and say how you know.
- Write in your own words. Never paste or retype text from a guidebook, website or map product, even with a credit. Facts (a rapid's name, its mile, its side, its class) are fine; someone else's sentences are not.
- Vote on what is right, not on who wrote it, and never vote with more than one account. Edits with enough votes are applied automatically; river staff and moderators can apply or turn one down.
Scout
- Add YouTube videos that really show the run, and mark rapids where they really are in the video.
- Notes and critiques are about the line and the water, not about the people in the video.
- Do not add a video to promote a business or a channel.
If something is wrong
- Report it where the app offers Report (on posts, notes and people), or email clay@lootsnap.com with a link or a description of where it is.
- Block someone to hide their posts and messages from you; they are not told.
- If someone is in danger, call 911 (or your local emergency number) or use your satellite messenger first. We cannot send help.
What we do
Moderators, river staff and we review reports. Depending on what happened we may remove the post, note, edit or video, mute the person in a river room, or suspend or close the account; someone who breaks these guidelines badly or repeatedly loses their account. If you think we got it wrong, write to clay@lootsnap.com and we will look again.
